Dermaplaning

Dermaplaning is a very popular form of manual exfoliation for the skin. It is a non-traumatic method of skin rejuvenation using a scalpel blade with light strokes to simply shave the skin’s epidermal surface and remove vellus hair (peach fuzz) and dead skin. The skin is immediately smooth, supple and vibrant, there is no downtime after the procedure and it can be performed every 4 weeks.

The epidermis does not contain blood vessels and receives nutrients through diffusion from the connective tissue below, therefore the cells of the epidermis are dead. By exfoliating the skin and removing dead cells, you are stimulating circulation and increasing blood flow to the epidermal layers of the skin. By stimulating blood flow, essential nutrients are delivered to the epidermis and thereby supports anti aging and radiant skin.

Side Effects of Dermaplaning

Some clients experience mild erythema (superficial reddening of the skin), but it subsides quickly. Besides that, and the radiant skin recently achieved, no one would ever know a service was rendered.

Dermaplaning contraindications

There are a few instances in which dermaplaning is not the right service for you. They are listed below.

Inflamed acne or other numerous raised lesions on the skin

Open wounds or active lesions such as cold sores

An allergy to nickel

Use of Accutane within 6 months of treatment (you have to be off of Accutane 6+ months prior to dermaplaning)

What do you need to do to prepare for Dermaplaning?

Discontinue any manual or chemical exfoliation at least 7 days prior to service.

If you are currently using retinol, exfoliating serums, enzymes, facial polishes, or scrubs stop using 7 days prior. Over exfoliation can cause breakouts, hyper/hypo pigmentation, redness, and dry skin. Skin cells need time to renew so you must allow them to do so before receiving dermaplaning treatment.

Schedule facial waxing 1-2 weeks prior to service. Recent chemical peel wait 2 weeks until dermaplaning.

If you receive waxing or threading it should be done 1-2 weeks prior to dermaplaning or 14 days post treatment.

While a chemical peel can be added to you dermaplane treatment. If you have had a recent chemical peel, you should wait 2 weeks after your peel to receive dermaplaning.

Avoid direct sun exposure for 5-7 days prior to service.

If you have sunburn or windburn, dermaplaing cannot be performed as it can further irritate the skin, increase sensitivity and cause issues post treatment. If you do have sunburn or windburn, you should wait until the skin has healed (usually 1-2weeks) before you have dermaplaning treatment.

Reschedule your appointment if you have open wounds or acne lesions.

Dermaplaning should not be done if you have active acne lesions, open wounds, lesions such as cold sores, active eczema, dermatitis or any other inflammation or skin disturbance. While dermaplaning is good for acne scarring, it can cause damage and further irritation to active lesions.

Schedule your Botox or fillers after your service.

After Botox you have to wait 4 hours before lying down and after fillers, you must wait 4 days before receiving any facial treatment. It is a good idea to wait 2 weeks after botox and fillers before dermaplaning. If you plan on having botox or fillers but also want dermaplaning, it is a good idea to have dermaplaning done prior to other treatments.

Wait 6 months after completion of Accutane to receive any exfoliation treatment.

Accutane increases skin sensitivity and makes it more fragile. While using Accutane, there is an increased risk for infections, increased sensitivity, and healing can be delayed. It takes quite sometime for the medication to fully exit your system, which is why it is recommended to wait 6 months after completion before dermaplaning or before receiving any treatments that remove facial skin cells.
